ORLANDO, FLORIDA – FEBRUARY 28: Former US President Donald Trump speaks to the Conservative … [+]
On Sunday evening, the 78th Golden Globe Awards honored the best in American television and film, selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. However, according to social media, the actual show had taken place hours earlier across the country in Orlando, Florida, at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). It was the first time former President Donald Trump spoke to supporters since President Joe Biden took office in January, and just weeks after Trump was acquitted in his second impeachment trial.
It was also noteworthy that there was a significant deviation from the protocol, in which former presidents were largely silent on issues relating to the sitting president. Instead, Trump heavily criticized Biden, suggesting that US policy had shifted from “America first to America last”.
CPAC is the largest gathering of Conservative activists and politicians in the United States and generally serves as a guide to the direction the Republican Party is headed. Based on the reception Trump received at the event and on social media, it is clear that Trump will remain a dominant force.
In addition, Trump made it clear that he was not interested in starting a new party but would work to unite Republicans and regain control of Congress, including the Senate and House of Representatives.
Based on social media, it seems clear that Trump’s supporters are not trying to get into his past but could instead look forward to the 2024 campaign. While former President Trump did not announce that he would run again, his words could suggest Trump is ready for a rematch with Biden – telling his supporters he was ready to win for the “third time” – again insist that election fraud had an impact on his loss to Biden in November.
Social media support
Since the November elections, Twitter and other platforms have largely been filled with tweets and posts calling for Trump’s impeachment, conviction and arrest, while others had hoped Trump would simply go away. However, after the CPAC speech, it appeared that his supporters were being energized in ways not even seen in the run-up to the elections.
Actor / comedian Terrence K. Williams (@W_terrence) was among Trump supporters who praised the former president’s speech.
Reporter Kyle Becker (@kylenabecker) noted the number of viewers who tuned in to see Trump’s CPAC address.
There were also many who found CPAC scored higher than the Sunday night Golden Globes ceremony on NBC.
Critics remain vocal
There were also quite a few critics on social media on Sunday and Monday. Among them was Noah Bookbinder (@NoahBookbinder), President of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, who tweeted, “Not only is Donald Trump sticking to the lie that he won the 2020 election, but his supporters are using that lie to to justify voting restrictions and democracy. That makes the passage of HR1, the For the People Act, which protects suffrage and democracy, more urgent. “
There was also no shortage of memes poking fun at the former president while others tried to liken CPAC to a white nationalist event.
The response on Sunday and Monday shows that Trump is largely at the forefront of the conservative US movement and that his supporters continue to stand by his side. Given this support, Biden’s demand for unity is unlikely to materialize – half the country stands by the other man’s side, while Biden’s own followers still seem unwilling to compromise on anything the GOP has to say.
The civil war is likely to continue to rage, especially on social media.
