Since winning the 2020 election, President-elect Joe Biden has called for unity and an end to bipartisanism that has deeply divided the country. This week he went from his official account (@JoeBiden) to social media to take his case.
He tweeted: “I believe America is strongest when we work with our allies. Here’s how we protect this country, fight terrorism and extremism, control this pandemic, manage the climate crisis and more.”
Such feelings were shared by many of his supporters, including his close personal friend, actress Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) who went further: “I want to give Trump supporters an olive branch.
I’m ready to move #ForwardTogether.
There is so much to be done to heal the nation. Let’s be part of the solution and not add to the problems we are facing. My comments are open. Please reply with #ForwardTogether. “
Ms. Milano’s comments were immediately challenged, particularly with the finding that she had acted like a sore loser for the past four years and only “been gracious” because Biden won the election.
Jon Hollis (@ hollis4congress), a Republican candidate for the seat of the 28th Congressional District in California, responded, “You want to expand an olive branch to include more than 74,000,000 people whom you humiliated, patronized, assaulted, lied to and falsely labeled as racist etc. It’s like getting shot and then the criminal comes back and says, “Hey, we can still be friends, right?” Your deception never ends!
@mislaneco offered a similar sentiment, “I remember you. You were the one staring at Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his hearings. You were the one who called Conservatives every name in the book and had no sensor [sic] your words in the least. There is no way you would offer an olive branch if your party lost … How about NO. “
@RayvnnLiberty added, “You wouldn’t say this if Biden lost. The only reason you’d want to postpone ‘#ForwardTogether’ is because your team is in power and the opposing team is essentially bowing to your will . “
In addition, many Biden supporters rejected the term #ForwardTogether. That included @ taurusangel25, who took on a harsh tone: “NO – I’m done extending the olive branch first. It’s your turn – YOU need to show real remorse and regret and really apologize before I even think about it. I will not do it.” hold out my hand to the Proud Boys, the ones who laughed when the Trumpers tried to drive a Biden bus “
@ anthonyvclark20 also took the hard line on Milan’s call for unity: “Glad you can extend an olive branch but I don’t have olives or branches for racists and bigots. There can be no unity with those people want to see who are otherwise excluded & suppressed
In all honesty, anyone who is a true ally would demand that they change and not accept who they are. “
Long critical of Trump
The Charmed alum has long been a vocal critic of President Trump and Republicans in general, which is why her call for unity on social media seems insincere – especially given that she was so vocal on the platform. It was literally weeks ago when the actress tweeted, “America or Trump. You can’t love both. #BidenWon”
There’s also some irony that the actress called her podcast “Sorry Not Sorry,” which is part of her bold statement that she won’t apologize to those who disagree with her. It might make their calls to “#ForwardTogether” sound hollow.
Perhaps the most informed answer, Conservative political commentator Joel Pollak, who currently serves as the senior editor for Breitbart News, tweeted, “I approach liberal friends / relatives I disagreed with to fix fences * before * the election . You can’t explain this just because ‘your side’ won. If you want reconciliation and didn’t do it before November 3rd, start with an apology. We deserve it. #ForwardTogether “
